SHONE PUIPIA x One More Thing
At the heart of this collection is a collaboration with One More Thing, a Bangkok-based material-driven brand that places an emphasis on textile tile and graphical woven surface – calling themselves the “Eccentric Surface Creator”. We have been working with them over the past year to develop 28 original jacquard fabric designs that are used throughout the collection. FEVER is a testament to all things that make us burn from within. It is ultimately a reaction to this global pandemic that has forced us to stay put for the past two years, and counting. We wanted to create a collection that is an audacious act of dressing up and uplifting oneself through clothing. A vision of joyful colours, clashing prints, and bold silhouettes has never been more poignant to project to the world.

At the beginning, we approached this collection as a fabric design project. The prints represent different key aspects of the brand and Shone’s passion in the arts and crafts. We created them using a process that combined hand-drawn and real-life sources with computer-generated techniques. Tulips, marigolds, and sunflowers were expressed in different mediums, such as pencil, charcoal, and acrylics. Spiraling bouquets were bleach-painted on fabric for its specific ephemeral brushstrokes. Bold stripes, when looked upon closely, has textures created from pencil rubbings on surfaces in our studio. We also looked back through past collections and selected some of our favorite patterns to be reinterpreted with jacquard weaving. The Yagasuri Scales, the Flame Lily, and the Berber Collage Stripes are rescaled and recolored in monochromatic tones for the new collection. Another part of our research brought us to graphical textile elements found in fabrics and handicrafts from different eras and parts of the world. Embroidery details in 18th-century European clothing were lifted to create bold graphical patterns. One design incorporated a collection of vintage Belgian lace Shone found in Antwerp. And the luntaya acheik, an indigenous Burmese textile pattern, inspired us with their striking colours and interwoven waves.

FEVER continues to explore further the wardrobe vocabulary of SHONE PUIPIA. Sharply tailored dresses and jackets meet the fluidity of bias tube fringe skirts and wispy fil-coupé textures on feminine cocoon shapes. The silhouettes follow the nature of the jacquard fabrics and clean cuts showcase the eccentric prints. The fabric structure allowed us to create strong lines and dramatic volumes while keeping the construction light and minimal. The final looks of evening gowns paired with matching baseball caps present our vision of contemporary couture.

Fever Pillows (2021)

These khid pillows with strings first appeared in the large-scale interactive installation titled The House is Crumbling at the National Gallery Singapore in 2017. Visitors could tie and untie over 4,000 pillows during the 4- month long period. Each day the scenario would change. It was a setting of soft, fragile, shared environment which can go either which way, depending on how each of us handles it. Whether you are tying or un-tying, simple actions can make a change.

Four years forward, we keep our rhythm and balance amidst the chaos. With the vibrant and exclusive design of SHONE PUIPIA, Fever Pillows accompany the collection and create a playful dialogue with the bold and uplifting silhouettes. In the words of the designer, “FEVER is a testament to all things that make us burn from within.” The pillows heat up and cool down.
